Social care workers in residential settings provide support to and manage the welfare of vulnerable residents of care and children’s homes, hostels and adult and youth centres. They work with clients with a range of issues, such as physical or learning disabilities, mental health conditions, drug or alcohol dependency.

As a residential social worker, you may be involved in providing physical care, offering individual counselling, leading group therapy sessions or teaching. The nature of the role will be influenced by the needs of the service users, but may include:

  • assessing residents’ needs and progress;
  • leading sessions on personal and social skills and giving practical advice on topics such as budgeting and benefits;
  • leading social activities;
  • helping residents to deal with problems and perhaps make the transition to independence;
  • liaising with families, social workers and other agencies;
  • writing medical, court or adoption reports;
  • ensuring adherence to standards of care within the relevant quality framework;
  • assessing that service provision meets the needs of a variety of different clients.

We arecurrently increasing our pool of temporary workers who can commit to this work. Previous experience is essential.
